Cambridge, Mass.-based walletiers Big Skinny, makers of the world's thinnest wallets that solve the top 5 wallet problems, created the giant wallet as a unique way to raise funds for more than eleven non-profit partner organizations such as the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter, PATS Kids, Salvation Army etc.
Big Skinny owner Kiril Stefan Alexandrov previously co-founded two non-profits before taking on the challenge of manufacturing the world's thinnest wallets and is keenly aware of the challenges of fundraising.
Big Skinny creative director Catherine Alexandrov spent hundreds of production hours constructing the wallet in her Cambridge office.
A selection of fun facts about the Cambridge wallet, according to Big Skinny:
-10.5 feet by 10 feet when closed, 10 feet tall and 21 feet long when open;
-171 feet of the company's proprietary nylon micro-fiber were used;
- 48 pounds of nylon micro-fiber;
- total weight with special supportive endoskeleton and wheels is 128 pounds;
- 20 feet of clear plastic used for the clear ID pocket and the additional pockets for informational material;
- 80 feet of heavy metal 3/4 inch plumbing piping… used for the endo-skeleton structure which keeps the wallet upright;
- 8 wheels make the wallet portable;
-160 hours of labor went into just sewing the wallet, with two people working on it! Another 45 hours on the endoskeleton and assembly;
- 90 feet of Velcro.
"The World's Largest Wallet is a perfect counterpoint to the commercialism of this season," said Alexandrov. "Our hope is that our big crimson wallet urges folks to open their wallets to help address the needs of the underserved community."
According to WHDH-TV, the "Big Skinny" has also submitted the wallet to the Guinness World Records.
The Largest Wallet in The World was modeled after their World Wallet, a wallet designed to accommodate all types of international currency as well as lots of credit cards.
The previous Guinness world record for the World's Largest Wallet was set by a Spanish company this past summer. That wallet was only 6 feet high, but weighed 450 pounds. The wallet used the skins of two cows and took a team of 13 craftsmen in Ubrique, Spain, according to reports.
