Largest torch-lit parade: Indonesia sets world record (Video)
JAKARTA, Indonesia — The Freedom Faithnet Global self-help group gathered 3690 people from 50 countries with flaming torches took part in a parade - setting the new world record for the Largest torch-lit parade, according to World Record Academy (www.worldrecordacademy.com).
The previous Guinness world record for the largest torch lit parade (multiple locations) was achieved by 2,086 participants during an event organised by Comitato Dolomite's Fire (Italy) in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy.
Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest torch lit image, formed by 2,496 people, in an event organised by University of Pittsburgh Class of 2014, Pennsylvania, United States.
"It was awesome. There was slight rain but people still turned up. We sang, we celebrated love in the world, and we broke two world records. We were certified last night," Yamal Hasmanan, spokesman for web-based "community group" Freedom Faithnet Global (FFG) which organised the events, told AFP.
The first challenge required participants to light torches one by one and keep them lit for 10 minutes, while the second required them to carry their torches in a street procession lasting 45 to 50 minutes, Hasmanan said.
"During the parade, some torches went out, so the number got smaller. But it's okay... we still managed to break the record," he said.
Organizer Yamal Hasmanan of Freedom Faithnet Global said Sunday that officials from Guinness World Records presented participants with certificates for the largest torch-lit image formed by people and for the largest torch-lit parade.
