Most
distance travelled on water by human power-world record set by Greg
Kolodziejzyk
[July
3] Calgary, Alberta--Canadian Greg Kolodziejzyk set a new world
record by pedaling his human powered pedal boat 107.9 miles in 24
hours.
"It feels great to break the world 24-hour pedal
boat record," says an exhausted Greg Kolodziejzyk. "I have to admit
that I was very impressed with the number of Calgary schools who,
after hearing my KidPower presentations aimed to raise awareness
about the childhood obesity epidemic showed up to support me and
cheer me on during my pedal boat record attempt. It is very encouraging
to know that our message of combining active living and healthy
eating with achieving one's dreams and goals is getting through.
However, right now, I am going to rest, recoup and then re-focus
on my Trans Atlantic crossing and my continued quest to influence
kids to live a healthier lifestyle."
Kolodziejzyk surpassed the record set in
2000 of 168.43 kilometers or 105 miles by Ironman World Champion
and US cycling hall of fame member John Howard. The new record is
107.9 miles (173.76 kilometers) that was closely monitored by officials
from the International Human Powered Vehicle Association who oversaw
the entire process.
This marks the second major world record
for Kolodziejzyk in less than a year. In August 2006, Kolodziejzyk
broke the human powered world distance record by cycling 650 miles
in 24 hours.
"My next challenge will be my most daunting," admits
Kolodziejzyk. "Cycling 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in
my human powered boat is a challenge that I am really excited about."
Before that can happen Kolodziejzyk has a lot
of work ahead that includes testing "WiTHiN", his prototype boat
that he will use to navigate the Atlantic and finding the right
corporate sponsors.
On July 23, 2006 Greg Kolodziejzyk has officially
broken the world Human Powered Vehicle record (HPV) record, setting
a new mark of 1046.94 km (650.538 miles), beating the previous record
of 1021.36 km (634.644 miles) set in 1995. "We celebrated with hugs,
high fives, and champagne," said an exhausted Kolodziejzyk.
The record attempt was officiated and ratified by the International
Human Powered Vehicle Association.
"We are currently looking for like-minded organizations
who value Greg's work with KidPower and his message of combining
active living and healthy eating with achieving personal goals,"
says Carol Marie Short, North American Corporate Sponsor Liaison
for pedaltheocean.com

In December of 2008, Greg is going to pedal his
human powered boat 'WiTHiN' 3000 miles across the Atlantic ocean
in less than 40 days setting a new crossing record while raising
money to fund his school speaking program "KidPower". Greg is now
building a prototype version of Within that will be used to gain
ocean experience.
Phase 1 of the prototype boat, called "WiTHiN-24"
was used to break the 24 hour human powered boat distance record.
