Heaviest Limousine: The Midnight Rider set world record

MACHADO, Calif., USA -- The 70ft long Midnight Rider weighs in at 22.7 tons, measures 70ft long, 13ft high, is classified as a limousine and features three lounges, a full bar
and five televisions - setting the new world record for the Heaviest Limousine.

The World's Heaviest Limousine is fully operational and licensed to operate on U.S. highways.

There is no previous Guinness world record for the heaviest limousine.

According to Guinness World Records, the longest limousine ever built is a 30.5-m long (100-ft), 26-wheeled limousine, designed by Jay Ohrberg of Burbank, California, USA.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world's highest limousine, from the ground to the roof, which measures 3.33 m (10 ft 11 in). Built by Gary and Shirley Duval (Australia).

'It's more like a travelling nightclub, even though it's classified as a limo,' said owner Pamela Bartholomew Machado, from California.

'The Midnight Rider was built to bring back the feel of the days of luxury railroad travel,' she said.

Those lucky enough to afford the $1050-an-hour rental fees can expect to be served by a 'crew' of five: two drivers, a hostess, an operations specialist and a bartender.

On the Net: The World's Heaviest Limousine

The Midnight Rider was originally conceived and designed in 1986. After some revision to the original design it was eventually approved for construction in March of 1997.

The design proposed a 25 ton, 416 square foot coach named "The Midnight Rider". It took 7 years to build.

The Midnight Rider is licensed by the Public Utilities Commission and operated by Irontree Management as a "Tractor-Trailer Limousine" and has been taking passengers since June of 2005.

The couple now plan to build another four of the vehicles. 'Each one will have a different theme, and we need coverage for the entire U.S. so we need more like the Midnight Rider,' Mrs Machado said.
