Largest maple leaf -
world record set by Eve Steel
VANCOUVER, Canada--Ten-year-old Eve Steel and her mother, Rita Steel, were out leaf-hunting near the corner of Cardero and Barclay streets when they came across a maple leaf measuring 44 centimetres by 34 centimetres (59 centimetres with the stem) - which sets the new world record for the Largest maple leaf.

"My daughter was just blown away by this beautiful, big leaf," said Steel.

"It just jumped out at me," said Eve, a Grade 5 student at Lord Roberts Elementary in the West End.

"It was really windy and it just popped up. I went, 'Wow, it's a big one.' "This is the record," she said proudly.

The largest maple leaves grow on broadleaf maple trees, also called big-leaf or Oregon maples.

The previous Guinness World record for the Largest maple leaf was found by Joseph Donato; it measures 34.61 cm wide, 29.21 cm long and 39.69 cm including the stem.

Carey Low, a Canadian adjudicator for Guinness World Records, says it's "exciting" that so many people are getting into the spirit of world records -- setting them and breaking them.

Low added that he finds it "quite amazing that in what's been five or six days since Joseph's leaf was announced as the Guinness World Record, that there's been this many other people who have found leaves that apparently are as big or bigger."

Eve has her prize leaf pinned on a wall at home, but it might not be hers much longer.
Her mother is in dire financial straits and has convinced Eve to put the leaf up for auction, in the hope they can avoid eviction.

Anyone who wishes to help the family out -- and own the magnificent leaf in the process -- can bid on it by calling Steel at 604-600-7618.
