Crowds cheered and clapped while hundreds
of mostly young girls performed the Irish jig in an attempt
to set a record for the single longest line of dancers.
The previous
record of 216 dancers, set in Dublin, Ireland, was meant
to be broken, said William Lee, from Pearl River, organizer
of the record attempt. (enlarge

"I thought it would be a great way to promote Irish
culture and the feis," said Lee, 43, whose 9-year-old daughter,
Brianne, took part in the event. "It's also just a fun time
for all the kids who dance here every year."
Thousands of Irish dancers from around the
country competed at the daylong feis, Gaelic for festival, which
was held at Anthony Wayne Recreation Area of Harriman State
Park. (enlarge

"Everyone did an amazing job, it feels unbelievable."
The event, sponsored by the Rockland County
Ancient Order of Hibernians, is considered one of the largest
in North America, said Pat Dwyer, chairwoman of the festival
for more than 20 years.
